Hey Y’all,
I’ve had a couple of emails asking about mom and when (or if) she is having surgery, so I wanted to take a few minutes to give you an update.
While undergoing tests for what is causing her anemia, they noticed a discoloration of her esophagus and they did a biopsy on a small section. The doctor explained that the discoloration is a result of acid reflux from her hiatal hernia, a condition she has been aware of, but did not realize was as bad as it was. According to the doctor, the esophagus is undergoing a change to protect itself from the acid. If something is not done, that process could lead to Esophageal Cancer, for which there is no “cure”. In addition, the hiatal hernia is severe enough that it could eventual get “twisted” and cut off the blood supply to her stomach. This could lead to the loss of her stomach, but would definitely lead to emergency surgery to correct. While no one wants to have major surgery like this, mom decided that it would be best to schedule a planned operation than have to deal with the possibility of an emergency operation. The procedure is scheduled for the morning of Monday, September 12th at Baptist East Hospital. She will be admitted to the hospital after the surgery and be there for approximately one week. She will then go to a surgical rehab facility of one, two, or three weeks before returning home.
She is doing extremely well and is confident that everything will go as planned. Naturally there is some concern on our part because it is “major” surgery and she is 81, however, we know who is in charge of this and everything that goes on in our lives and trust in His will. We appreciate the prayers and hope you will continue to keep her in them.
Again, thank you for your concern and prayers.
