Family Worship Days Coming Up

Hi there, Phos kids!

This coming Sunday (May 29) is our last Sunday at Oldham County High School.  We are inviting all kids to join their families in the auditorium at 10 AM to worship together!

The following Sunday (June 5), we will be meeting at 10:30 AM at the new property (4200 Centerfield Drive) for the first time!  As this is the first Sunday of the month, this will be a Family Worship day also!  Let's all come and bring lots of friends as we celebrate the start of a new adventure in a new place together!

(Nursery and preschool care will still be available on all Family Worship Days.)

Thank you!

Here's the working drawing for the renovations that will take place in the coming months at 4200 Centerfield Drive -- the new base camp for Phos Church. We'll begin worshipping at the new space on Sunday June 5, 2011 at 10:30 A.M.  We'll be renting the space while we work out financing in the weeks ahead.  Once we have full possession of the property we'll get busy asap to renovate it to welcome the community by September 2011.

Pray for Bonnie & Bob Arvin and Mike & Lisa as well in the days ahead...

Bonnie Arvin just got word that she has Melanoma that has moved into her liver.  It's a serious medical situation.

Bob reports that she is doing better than he is right now.  They'll be learning what the treatment options are later today.

They are asking that we pray for strength during this time.  Their faith is strong but as Bob has said to me before sometimes God's people go through hard times.  So, let's gather close as the family of God and walk with the entire Arvin clan in the days ahead.  Encouragement, prayer and 'being there' however you can in this season is truly helpful.

Let's walk together with God and the Arvins.

Just to be sure that you connect the dots, Bonnie's son is Mike Arvin who is our Worship Leader.

Peace,
Jeff

When Good Men Get Angry small

This is my most recent book and was the most fun to write. Why was it fun to write? Because I used real stories with a lot of dialogue. Of course, I tweaked the stories to hide the identity of the people involved and to bring out the most important principals. These true stories, like "The Man With a Hole in His Face" (chapter 3), "The Man Who Withheld Sex From His Wife" (chapter 4), and "The Man Who Yelled at His Daughter" (chapter 5). One man told me the book was so fun to read he was stunned at the amazing insights it contained. If you want to manage and express your anger like Jesus did, this is the book for you or you could order one for a friend.

The coastline of the Pacific Northwest boasts some of the most beautiful country in the world. Primeval forests form a soaring cathedral over the hills. Sheer cliffs stand hundreds of feet above the ocean. Giant black rocks form surreal towers that rise over the ocean surface, seagulls resting on the black monoliths look like specks of dandruff. Trees, battered by wind, bent and bowed lean toward the east--away from the water as though they were paralyzed while trying to run from the twenty-foot waves that crash into the rocks and send white spray and foam fifty feet into the air.

Scenery - Fear God About fifteen miles south of the resort town of Cannon Beach I find a viewpoint perched high above the surface of the ocean. Along the edge of the parking lot stands a two-foot high stone wall. As I examine the wall I spot a seldom used path that runs from the wall toward the cliff. I climb over the wall and walk away from the parking lot. The path creeps along a narrow ridge that runs at a ninety-degree angle from the coastline. The trail slips between a thick growth of Oregon Grape that stand seven or eight feet high--tall enough to obscure my view in every direction.

Bill by CaveI hike a quarter of a mile and exit the vegetation and stand at the very end of a point that protrudes several hundred yards out over the ocean like a giant plank resting on steep walls. Below and to the north towering cliffs made of rock look like layered black slate. Portions of the rock cliff stick out in a perpendicular angle from the rest of the rock cliff. I see what looks like giant keyholes in the black slate. Monstrous waves crash into the rocks and send white foamy spray, like frothy shrapnel, through the keyholes.

I stand spellbound by the beauty and mesmerized by a blending of fear and fascination. One false step and I'll plummet to my death on the jagged rocks far below. I admire the splendor of this spot yet I respect the danger of getting too near the edge. Even so, I stand as close as possible to the cliff so I can view the spectacular display of power and beauty.

Overwhelmed by sensory overload, I marvel at nature's beauty and the God who created it. Fear, pleasure, and respect compete for my attention. In the book of Ecclesiastes, after a futile search for meaning in life without God, Solomon said, "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments" (Ecc. 12:13). In a moment at that spot on the Oregon coast I feel brushed by God's presence and suddenly realize, in a fresh way, what it means to "fear" God.

I stand in awe of him. I revere him. I'm drawn in by his beauty, majesty and love and yet I respect his dangerous power. Don't misunderstand me. I don't mean God is in nature. That would be pantheism. I mean that as I stood on that cliff I felt respect for the danger and the awe for the natural beauty. To fear God is to respect his power and stand in awe of his beauty.

Shrouded in his presence, we find an identity that will imbue our lives with eternal meaning and permeate our efforts with the divine. His presence, and his presence alone, will satisfy our search for significance and fill the empty corners of our heart.

Locking arms,

Bill

A Letter to Phos Church and Our Friends ....

'Take Us Higher'  - A Campaign to help Phos be a City On a Hill in this Community AND to Assist YOU in Getting Bigger in your Relationship with God

Let's see what God can do with Us at Phos to Take Us All Higher and Reach our Community even better in the years ahead.

You have a chance to trust God to do more in you and for you and through you by participating fully in the 'Take Us Higher' Campaign.

Phos Church is on a faith-building journey to step up and purchase her first property at 4200 Centerfield Drive -- an existing church property with a 10,800 square foot building on 10 Acres in Centerfield just 1 minute off of I-71.  Please prayerfully consider how you and your family can step up and join God in this exciting adventure.

It's going to take time, talent and treasure to make this dream a reality.  God always invites people to join Him in what He's about to do in the world.  Remember that He asked David to kill a giant, asked Peter to walk on water, invited Abraham to go to a place that He would show him, told Moses to take on Pharaoh, told Noah to build a very large boat in a land where it had never rained,  and asked Jesus to give up His life for you and me.  He always includes people in His plan to redeem the planet one person at a time, and I don’t want any of us to miss out on this opportunity to see Him at work in our midst once again.   I wonder what God is asking you to do with the challenge in front of us in this 'Take Us Higher Campaign'?  When the body moves strong together there is no limit to what God can do with us, for us and through us.

We'll learn more about the possibilities on the Sundays coming up:

Sunday, May 8th - we'll explore and ask how God can take us higher for the good of our kids and our kid’s kids.  We'll hear from several of our Moms on this Mother's day about how the building at 4200 can help us in reaching that goal.

Sunday, May 15th  -  we'll explore and ask how God can Take Us Higher for His Glory and we'll share some concept drawings of what we can do at 4200 to reach our community even better than we do now and help us Grow Big People more effectively than we do now.

Sunday, May 22nd -  we’ll explore and ask how God can Take Us Higher and Make Us One.  At the end of this service, you and your family will be asked to bring your best and strongest 1 time gift and/or make a 4-year commitment of what you’d like to pledge over and above your regular giving.

In addition to our normal Sunday meeting time, we'll prayerfully consider what God is asking of us at two Prayer Meetings on Wednesdays May 11 & 18 at 7 PM over at 4200 Centerfield Drive.  We'll have a focused Prayer Time centered around what God wants to do with us, for us and through us in the years ahead at 4200 Centerfield Drive.   For those LXG’s that normally meet on Wednesdays, please plan to attend these prayer meetings instead.

Party at 4200 Centerfield Drive on Sunday, May 22 immediately after our worship service at OCHS....

We'll share the results from our one time offerings and pledges and celebrate what God is up to among us.  We'll have BBQ cooked up by Nate Owsley and drinks provided by the church.  Julie Wilson is organizing the rest of the Party at the New Place and you can reach her via email at  jefeandjulia@bellsouth.net if you'd like to dive into the party planning mode with her.

Praying that God takes Us All Higher in the Days Ahead,
