Hey Y’all,

I’ve had a couple of emails asking about mom and when (or if) she is having surgery, so I wanted to take a few minutes to give you an update.

While undergoing tests for what is causing her anemia, they noticed a discoloration of her esophagus and they did a biopsy on a small section.  The doctor explained that the discoloration is a result of acid reflux from her hiatal hernia, a condition she has been aware of, but did not realize was as bad as it was.  According to the doctor, the esophagus is undergoing a change to protect itself from the acid.  If something is not done, that process could lead to Esophageal Cancer, for which there is no “cure”.  In addition, the hiatal hernia is severe enough that it could eventual get “twisted” and cut off the blood supply to her stomach.  This could lead to the loss of her stomach, but would definitely lead to emergency surgery to correct.  While no one wants to have major surgery like this, mom decided that it would be best to schedule a planned operation than have to deal with the possibility of an emergency operation.  The procedure is scheduled for the morning of Monday, September 12th at Baptist East Hospital.  She will be admitted to the hospital after the surgery and be there for approximately one week.  She will then go to a surgical rehab facility of one, two, or three weeks before returning home.

She is doing extremely well and is confident that everything will go as planned.  Naturally there is some concern on our part because it is “major” surgery and she is 81, however, we know who is in charge of this and everything that goes on in our lives and trust in His will.  We appreciate the prayers and hope you will continue to keep her in them.

Again, thank you for your concern and prayers.

For teens with apps...

Hi to all you teens!

If you get apps on your phone or iPod... I just wanted to let you know about the free Bible app done by YouVersion.  It is called Bible and has a brown picture of a Holy Bible as the icon.  The best part is that they have some reading plans on there, and some of those reading plans are designed just for teens!  If are you needing some structure to your daily time in God's Word, use one of these plans that are on topics great for teens: peer pressure, dating, integrity, etc.

AND... if you don't get apps, please know that you can still use this program!  Go to youversion.com and find all the same things there!

Let me know if you all ever need any guidance or direction in figuring out where to start reading your Bible or how to keep going!

Love you all!

Hi Jeff,

Here's the email I promised!  We are looking for a hiking backpack for BethAnn to take to San Francisco and Asia.  They will be moving around a lot in Asia, and YWAM suggested that they bring a hiking backpack to carry their belongings.  It will be her only "suitcase" while she is travelling internationally.

The type of backpack we are looking for is about 55 liters with an internal frame.  But...we are not picky and would entertain other ideas as well.  We are willing to buy a backpack from someone but would gladly accept a donation too :)

Maybe someone in the Phos family has exactly what she needs.  If not, then it will be available somewhere else.

Thanks for all your prayers.  BethAnn has a lot to do before she leaves on September 12, but we are getting there!

Pancake Breakfast for OC's Performance Troupe (with the McLeod girls)

This Saturday, September 3rd, the Oldham County Performance Troupe will host a pancake breakfast at Applebee's in LaGrange, starting at 8:00am. Tickets are $5.00. You can buy them at the door. In addition to all you can eat pancakes, the troupe will be singing while you eat. They are raising money for a special trip coming in January. They are going to an International Theatre Workshop in Atlanta. Disney has something to do with this. At the workshop, there will be a star from a Disney show and awards are given out. It's a great opportunity and an honor to be asked to go.

Thanks for your help.

Subject: Reminder of start of Bible Study

Just a reminder: The Priscilla Shrier 'Jonah" Bible study will begin tomorrow.  Morning class will begin at 9:30am and evening class will begin at 7pm. We are meeting at 4200 Centerfield Drive.   The cost of the book will be $12.00 and you can purchase those tomorrow.  I am so excited about getting to know some new people and just getting to study God's word with you.  Everyone is welcome, and bring a friend if you want.  Can't wait to see how God will change our lives as individuals and as a group.
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.  Love ya, Theresa

My thoughts on Ironman - Meredith Lewis

Being a volunteer for Ironman can be an exciting, intense, humbling and a very gratifying experience.

There is something special about watching those athletes work so hard to achieve a goal that they have set before themselves.    Crossing that Ironman finish line has to be an incredible feeling. Receiving that medal around their neck that signifies them as an "Ironman" or "Ironwoman", WOW! And, for a moment, a week or maybe even longer they may feel as though they have achieved "greatness"!

This achievement, this "greatness" however, hasn't come without cost.  They have worked their tails off hour after hour to reach this pivotal moment. They have sacrificed time with their families, trained day in and day out and have stuck to an incredibly strict diet in order to be in tip top shape for this one day.

I have often wondered what it would be like if we were to run the race that God has called us to with such commitment, determination, sacrifice, and discipline as these "Iron People" do.

Not as if we are training for one day but for everyday.  What if we new our Jesus so well, that we could wake up every morning ready to take on whatever the world threw at us?  What if we were so confident in the love that Christ set before us on the cross that we could not help but share that love with our "neighbors"?  Would our lives look the same?  Would our friend's lives look the same? Would it be possible that we could make a bigger difference in this world?

In Hebrews 12:1b God has called us to run our race well, just as these Ironmen and women have:

"Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."

This will not come without cost!  We must get rid of the crap that takes over our lives, the sin that entraps us and makes us complacent and unable to change.
Because reality is that God has a much bigger "greatness" in store for us.  A "greatness" that if we let it can last not just one day or one week, or one month, but for eternity.

This is not an easy race to run, there will be sacrifice, there will be loss, there will be a need for discipline, determination, & commitment.

But you don't have do it alone.   The body of Christ is here to run this race with you.  Phos Church is here to run this race with you.

And the reward, oh the reward, we can't begin to imagine how "GREAT!" it will be.
