Wanted to ask you to join me in praying for Tonya Lim as she heads into surgery today.  She's the mother of one of the Lacrosse players I coached last spring, Ben Snow.  So, pray her along today, please.

Mary Mueller headed home after a Successful surgery....

Mary had Gall Bladder surgery yesterday and was headed home with Robbie a bit ago.  She's sore, but doing well.  Robbie and Mary will get to enjoy a much deserved vacation over Fall Break after all!!  

Keep them in your prayers and be sure to let them know how much you appreciate them.

While speaking at the commencement exercise at Stanford University on June 12, 2005, Steve Jobs said this:

 

"When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: 'If you live each day as if it was your last, some day you'll most certainly be right.' It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "no" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

 

"Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."

 

Last week, after battling cancer for seven years, Steve Jobs died. One day you and I will also die. Considering this reality isn't morbid. Indeed, it can add meaning to our lives, as it did for Jobs. In Ecclesiastes 7:1, Solomon said, "The day of death is better than the day of birth."

 

Initially his words confused me. But as I contemplated their meaning I realized one way they are true. The day of birth is always filled with unrealistic hopes for the future. When an infant fills his lungs with air and lets out that first primal scream his act doesn't trigger any deep thoughts in those present. They may celebrate, but they won't contemplate.  We're too filled with happiness and dreams about the new life that just entered the world.

 

The day of death however is better than the day of birth because it forces us to think deeply about our own demise. As I age I sense the window of life closing. Statistically speaking, I'm running out of time. And nothing makes me realize how little time I have left than for someone I don't even know, like Steve Jobs, to die. The reality of my own mortality is driven home more deeply and with stronger feeling when someone I know and love dies--like my friend Glenn Rose who died unexpectedly in October, 2008. We had made a trip to New York earlier that year. And now he's gone. 

 

One question I consider as I reflect on my future death is this: Who am I living for? Am I living for people I don't even know? People who won't miss me when I'm gone? Am I living for success? Or, wealth? I believe I want to live my life for God. But I also want to live it for those who love me, those who will cry when my body is planted in the ground--or cremated and my ashes are tossed into the wind--dust particles to one day be captured by God and again breathed to life.

 

Yes, I want to live for my wife, three sons and two grandchildren. I want to live for my friends who will weep when I die and whose death will release my tears. And I want my life to please God.

Meredith, include this in the weekly and please get that out this morning.... I'll also post on the Phos News Blog right now....

I can't tell you how energized I am by the way the Phos team has responded to the renovation efforts at 4200 this week.  We have gotten a boatload of 'stuff' done.  Or, maybe I should say, we've gotten a boatload 'undone'.  The good news about the 'undoneness' of this moment is that it paves the way for the renovations that will position Phos to be even more effective in reaching those who aren't engaging in a relationship with Jesus yet.  So, congratulations on a STRONG week of service.  

We have one more night to get 4200 reset for worship this Sunday.  The tear out is 95% completed in the worship and entry areas so we're ready to scrub her down and get it put back together for worship this weekend at 4200.  We need a few ladder steady skills people to do a little more this evening and then we need a bunch o people to come in with shop vacs, dust rags and cleaning supplies to pull it all back together for worship this Sunday.  

We'll have a season here between the tear out of the past few days and the restoration where things will look 'rough'.  Let' just let this be a reminder that we are all works in progress and are anxiously awaiting the full renovations of our lives by the power of the Holy Spirit.  So, let the 'undoneness' of 4200 be a 'Call to Worship' each time you enter the doors these days.

Hope you'll join us this evening at 6 at 4200 ready to pull it all back together.  

YES, there will be food.  Yes, this is a 'kid friendly' service experience and YES, your students can get community service hours for diving in here and working.

Mary Mueller Surgery Set for 3 PM for Today (Wednesday, October 12) at Norton Hospital near Lowe's

Just got off the phone with Robbie and Mary is resting, just had a shower and is preparing to have her Gall Bladder removed at 3 PM.  They are at Norton Hospital near Costco/Lowes.  Pray with them.

No Teen Groups Sunday Night

Great work this past Sunday!!!  All the teens did an incredible job with the demolition of the new building that marks the start of all the renovations to come!  Thank you to all who came out... and to those who didn't, be ready for lots of changes when you come this Sunday!

Also wanted to update everyone: we do not have small group this coming Sunday since it is the beginning of Fall Break.  We will, however, have group the following Sunday (the last day of Fall Break).

Come Join the Fun Tonight at 4200! 6 to 8 or 9 (your choice)

We're gonna have even more fun this evening at 4200.  Last night the teens did an amazing job of getting a ton done and I hope we can keep pace with their start this evening.  

A few things to remember:
-Bring safety goggles or glasses if you have them.  We have a few pair, but not enough for everyone
-Bring work gloves -- preferably canvas or leather as opposed to cotton.  Again, we have several pair but may not be enough for a large crowd.
-Wear closed toe shoes -- old tennis shoes are fine.
-Wear clothes that you won't mind having paint on.

A few things we could use this evening (if you bring these it would help a lot):
-electrical tape
-duct tape
-wire cutters
-tin snips
-sawsall
-small sledge hammers
-regular hammers
-push broom
-large flat shovel for scooping up drywall 'crumbs'

We'll gather in the worship center at 6 to pray and talk through the game-plan for this evening and then we'll get to work.

We'll order Pizza once we know how many people are there.  If you could bring a two liter or a pack of cookies or chips to go along with the pizza that'd be fantastic.  But, you don't have to bring anything!

We have a full slate of indoor and outdoor work to be done from demolition to Ikea shelf building to painting to weed-eating.  So, whatever you enjoy doing we've got a job for you.
