August 26 2012 Love Em Like Jesus Loves You / Parenting 101 John 13:34

John 13:34 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

34 “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another.

Parenting Principle # 1:
As Jesus has been to me so I must be to my children.

What has Jesus done for you?
Matthew 19:13-15 Makes ROOM for you in his life.
Acts 2:39 Calls you
John 3:16 Saves you
John 17:20 Prays for You
Matthew 28:20b Promises to be with you
John 8:11a Forgives you
John 8:11b  corrects and redirects you -- go and
sin no more
Luke 10:1-12 Sends you into service
Jeremiah 29:11 Propels us into a hope filled future
Luke 15:20 Keeps the porch light on.

What else can you think of that Jesus has done for you?

Philippians 2 New International Version (NIV)

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God
something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
        even death on a cross!

Let this same mind be in you”
To be a great parent you need a heart / brain transplant -- a heart replaced with the love of God and a brain washed in the mindset of Jesus Christ himself.  But, how do you do that?

How do we ‘let this same mind be in us’?

2 things to do:
Be Transformed by Renewing our Mind and Abiding in Christ.

1.  Transformation

Romans 12:2 New International Version (NIV)

Do not conform to the pattern of this world,  but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.   Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

  1. Don’t be squeezed into the pattern of this world.
  2. Be ‘transformed’ [ aka, ‘made new’ ] by the ‘renewing’ of your mind.

How do we ‘renew’ our minds?
-Scripture -- read, listen, music
-Prayer -- all the time communicate with God
-Community -- get on the Phos Train!  Being a Christ
follower and raising children is a team sport at PCC.
-Buddies -- over the coming months build Christ centered friendships with one
or two that you can really walk with.

2.  Abiding -- John 15

Take Home Message:

As Jesus has been to me so I must be to my children.

Call(s) to Action

Ironman IMPORTANT INFORMATION for those serving

Hey Phos Ironman Volunteers,

I just wanted to touch base with you and say thank you for volunteering for Ironman this coming Sunday.  It is going to be a blast.  Here are a few things I did want to remind you of:

1.  We will be serving at Ironman and also having regular Sunday services at 4200 at 9:30 AM and 11 AM so make plans to attend both if you can!

2.  Attached is sheet with everyone's names and the time they signed up to work, this is mostly just a reminder in case you forgot.  Just show up at your appointed time and don't forget to check-in and get your t-shirt.

3.  If you or your child is under 18 and they are planning to serve at Ironman, there is a waiver that you need to fill out.  It is attached to this email so you can print it out and bring it with you.  Everyone under the age of 18 must have a waiver if they wish to serve, this is Ironman mandated.

4.  We will be serving just outside of Buckner Baptist Church (3714 Kentucky 146  La Grange, KY 40031)  from 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM.  We will have a shuttle starting after the 1st service at 4200 (approximately 10:15 AM) over to Buckner Baptist Church and back if you are interested in parking at 4200. We are trying to make the transition from the service to working at Ironman easy for you so feel free to use this service.  The shuttle will continue throughout the afternoon, with a large pick-up at 4200 following the 2nd service (approximately 12 PM), in order to drop-off the 12-4 crew at Buckner Baptist Church.

5.  Please RSVP by emailing Laura@phoschurch.com if you plan on using childcare services on Sunday (beyond normal Sunday morning times).  We will have childcare available at 4200 from 9:15 to 2:15.  Drop your kiddos off anytime during this period.

6.  Make sure you prepare for Sunday and be ready for heat and sun by drinking lots of water and wearing sunscreen.    Everyone will also be given an Ironman t-shirt that you will be required to wear, which you can change into at the church.  We will have plenty of water and provide lunch for you, but if you would like any snacks during the day you will need to bring those yourself.

7.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email Meredith@PhosChurch.com and I will help get answers for you.  So excited about a great day!

Looking forward to serving with you!

Parenting is a Privilege
Parenting is a Stewardship -- a Prize from God himself
Parenting is a Powerful Place for Producing Christ followers
Parenting is Priceless Journey
Parenting is Influence
Parenting is a Priority

Parenting is one of our top priorities and the # 1 Priority of Parenting is _________________. [ Matthew 28:18-20 ]

Deuteronomy 6:5-7 The Message (MSG)

5 Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that's in you, love him with all you've got!

6-9 Write these commandments that I've given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.

2 Powerful Parenting Principles

Principle1 -- ______________ go first.
Follow Jesus with all your heart and take your kids with you.  Invest in, build, strengthen and fortify your relationships with God, with His Church and with your children.  You’ll need a team to help you parent well.

Principle 2 -- Parenting is Job # ______.
Job # 1 -- becoming a full-on Child of God yourself
Job # 2 -- creating a strong marriage where your children can thrive under the
umbrella of your love and protection
Job # 3 -- Parenting well so that your children become children of God by the
work of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Job #4 -- Build Christ centered friendships with other parents here at PCC for the
journey ahead.

Joshua 1:5-10 Contemporary English Version (CEV)

Joshua, I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you.

6-8 Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this land.

I’ve commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the Lord your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.

Notice how God encourages Joshua by reminding him that He would be with him, will help him, and give him victories.  Notice how He says that He will be there with Joshua wherever he goes.  God always leads through relationship before principles.  His relationship with us is the platform that He uses to influence us.  He puts the relationship first.  We should parent the same way.  Rules without relationship leads to rebellion.

The # 1 Way to Lead is Through Relationship

So, to accomplish our # 1 Parenting Priority of helping our children become full-on children of God we need to invest in, strengthen and build stronger and stronger relationships with our Lord, with our spouse, with our children, with our church and with other parents in the community.

How can you show your child(ren) that you are ‘with them’ and that you will ‘help them’ this week?

Calls to Action:

-Commit to deeper and stronger Bible meditation and application in your own life as a way to allow Jesus to become Lord of your life.

-Work on your marriage.  Help is available. See any Laura Cochran, Meredith Lewis, Mike Arvin or Jeff Fuson to learn more about counseling resources for couples.

-Commit to Phos Community Church to be a team player and get active with other parents.  Serve and be served.  Join us for Lunch and Learn on Sunday, September 9.  Details are in the Worship Guide.  RSVP on the form enclosed today.

-Parents of Pre-Teens and Teens plan to join us on Wednesday, September 19th at 7 PM here at 4200 for the Kick Off of Operation Parent’s ‘Parenting 101’ Course here at 4200.  This will be a great way to build relationships with other parents and to build a village to help you with the Priority of Parenting. Learning from the best...With One of my A Team Leaders

Sometimes....

Sometimes a friend encourages you to read a book that unlocks your next steps and gives you the courage to attempt the impossible.... Happened for me several years ago when Betsy Ringer told me about Mark Batterson and his book, 'In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day'. When I started reading I was captivated, elevated, challenged, inspired and motivated.

Motivated on to the next steps of launching a new church to reach people who don't go to church.

Several years have past and dozens of people have given Their lives to Jesus as Lord and Phos Community Church is rocking along. It's a dream coming true.

Today Julie and I are at Ebenezer's Coffee House in on 2nd and F Streets in downtown D.C. Where we will work with Mark Batterson and other leaders from the King's Community to dream further... I'm humbled, honored, thrilled to be on this journey with my friends at PCC. The best is yet to come.

Thanks Betsy for recommending that book! Your leadership in my life has made a ton of difference.

Trudy Singleton and Her Crew Need our Prayers These days...

To say that Trudy and her family have lot going on right now would be an understatement. Sometimes life comes in waves and this is true for Trudy right now. Her granddaughter, Kenzie, is undergoing more Doctor visits and a trip to Cincinnati Children's Hospital for more testing and evaluation. Trudy's sister, Sherry, is also going through a really rough patch. And, there's more with Bob's dad and the loss of two close friends' husbands in the past few weeks. Lift Trudy up to the Father these days.

Peace,
Jeff
